TRUE GHOST STORIES - Grandma Kept Her Promise

Updated on May 31, 2011

Did a Ghost or Spirit visit us..? as told by Sharon K

My Grandma Celine lived a few streets away and dropped by our house often. Saturday mornings were her favourite time because it was the day when everyone was home so she’d get to see me and my three younger sisters and one little brother, and my mum Marina, Grandma Celine’s only daughter. My Dad had left us years and years ago now, so Mum and Grandma Celine were our main carers. We were a tight-knit family and loved to get together to share meals, love and laughter.

One Wednesday evening as Grandma Celine was heading out the door, she turned to Mum and said, “I’ll come by and see you on Saturday morning before I go shopping.” “I’ll make a special breakfast for us,” my Mum replied.

But Grandma Celine died suddenly of a heart attack on Thursday night, so Saturday morning was a particularly sombre time and all of us felt the loss of Grandma Celine very deeply; especially Mum.

As Mum began serving us kids our breakfast, our dog Chloe started barking furiously at the front door as if someone was walking down the path. I went to find out what the ruckus was about and opened the door to see who’d arrived. But there was no one to be seen. Chloe stopped barking and instead danced and jumped in the doorway as though greeting someone she knew and loved. I thought her behaviour was a little odd as I stood watching, but the next moment I was totally flabbergasted as the door opened fully of its own accord, and Chloe trotted back inside as though happily following someone down the hallway.

I made my way back to the door and closed it behind me, feeling quite perplexed and a little spooked. Once back in the dining room, Mum looked up and asked me who’d been at the front door. “No one” I replied as nonchalantly as possible. “That’s odd,” she said, “I could have sworn someone walked in just before you did. I heard Chloe trotting up the hallway.” I didn’t know what to say or how to explain what I’d seen, particularly with my younger siblings sitting around the table with their big eyes watching and their big ears not missing a thing. I didn’t have a clue as to how to describe what I'd seen so it would make logical sense, and I didn’t want to spook them, so I just shrugged it off and sat down to eat. The others took my lead and got back to eating their breakfast, and I thought that would be the last of it.

But not for long ...

Just then Chloe trotted into the room, her nose in the air looking up at someone or something that none of us could see. We could sort of see or sense something there, but couldn’t physically see anything but air. Chloe nodded her head and wagged her tail enthusiastically, then lifted a paw for a handshake with thin air. We all watched in silence and disbelief as Chloe performed the special tricks that she’d to play with Grandma Celine every time she’d visit. It was as though Chloe had an in invisible playmate.

A few moments later Chloe looked up and watched something/someone move across the room, then she trotted out and towards the front door again, as though following someone. She went and sat at the front door for a moment waging her tail, as though seeing a guest or visitor off.

We all looked at one another in disbelief. No one said a word. We all just sat there with wide eyes and open mouths. Once over the initial shock, we all started talking over the top of each other!

Had Grandma Celine come for her Saturday morning breakfast visit as she’d promised?

I like to think so ...
