TRUE GHOST STORIES - The Ghostly Handprint

Updated on May 7, 2011

Whose Handprints kept appearing on the windows ..?

When my grandad Carl passed away from cancer, my mum couldn’t bring herself to visit his final resting place at the cemetery. “I just can’t face it”, she’d say sadly.

Then one morning, a week after the funeral, Mum noticed a large, ghostly handprint on one of the dining room windows. She stood and looked at it perplexed for a moment, as the handprint was on the inside and it was a huge hand. She then gave it a quick rub with her dust cloth and the large handprint vanished.

Dad had already left for work and my sister and I were heading out the door to school for the day. Mum would also be at work, so the house was empty all day. I was the first one home that evening and didn’t notice anything different or odd.

When Mum came home I could hear her muttering under her breath at the doorway, so I came out of my bedroom to see what had happened. Mum pointed to a new, large handprint on the window next to the front door. She asked me if I’d put it there, so I held up my hand to show her the size difference between my hand and the prints, and said no, obviously. Mum said that she was the last one to leave the house in the morning, and I was the first one home – so who else could have done it and who’s handprint was it? The print was on the inside of the window, so it had to be someone inside the house.

An hour later when Dad got home from work, Mum caught him up at the front door and grabbed his hand, holding it up against the handprint on the window. But even my dad’s hand was quite a lot smaller than the print on the glass. Dad asked what was going on and Mum told him about the earlier handprint on another window that morning before she’d left for work. We spoke about it again over our evening meal, and no one had a logical explanation as to how the ghostly handprint had got there.

The handprint reappeared every day for over two weeks, with the same handprint showing up on windows all over the house. Sometimes they were even upside down or sideways.

It was always weird and creepy, but we seemed to just live with it and hardly even spoke of it anymore. It almost became ‘normal’ for the ghostly handprints to appear.

Mum had a girlfriend of hers over one Saturday and was showing her the latest handprint and telling her all about the goings on. Her friend Sandra commented on the large size of the handprint and said that the owner of the hand must have been a very big man. Suddenly Mum said, ‘my dad was a big man and he had huge hands’.

When she realized what she’d said her whole face seemed to change, as though she just remembered something or realized something. ‘Could it be Dad do you think?’ she asked her friend. Sandra just gave her a funny look and asked back ‘well what do you think?’

Over dinner that night, Mum told us all that she’d decided to go to the cemetery and visit her father’s plot. ‘Maybe the handprints will stop,’ she reasoned. The next day Mum prepared to go, although she said she was nervous. She wiped off the handprint on her way out the door and we wished her well.

I don't know exactly what Mum said or what happened at the cemetary, but the ghostly handprints never reappeared after Mum’s visit to her father’s resting place.
