TRUE GHOST STORIES - The Ghosts in the Childcare Centre

Updated on May 31, 2011

Spirit Children ...

* As told by Nadia

My very first job after finishing school and gaining my degree was at a neighbourhood childcare centre. At morning tea break on my first day, another of the carers, Tina, handed me a cup of steaming coffee and said nonchalantly, “Funny things happen around here you know ...” “Like what?” I asked curiously. “Things get moved around at night, ghost children appear and disappear, stuff like that ...” Tina said. “We’ve all seen extra kids and sometimes find the name tags of children who don’t even attend the centre” she continued. Our supervisor walked in at that point so the topic was dropped and not spoken of again ...

... until one morning a few weeks later when I came in to work 10 minutes early.

Our supervisor Kathy’s car was parked so I entered the centre to prepare myself for the day. I spotted Kathy on the phone in her office on my way through to the back playroom - but suddenly came to an abrupt halt in my tracks at the sight in front of me. Not only had things been moved around overnight, but the floor was littered with books, blocks, pencils and crayons, and all manner of toy. The wasn’t a shelf or bookcase that hadn’t been upturned. “Who could have done this?” I said out loud.

I hadn’t heard Kathy walk up behind me, so I jumped with fright when all of a sudden her voice was loud right behind my ear. “Yeah, its’ a messy one this time. Usually they move a couple of books around here and there and scribble on the blackboard, but this is ridiculous,” she said.

“Who are they ...?” I asked.

Kathy gave me a quizzical look, shrugged her shoulders and said that she really didn’t know for sure, but that it had been going on long before she’d started working there five years previously. The staff at the time told her that they were the ghosts and spirits of local children, but Kathy didn’t know what to think or believe. And neither did I. The children were due any moment so I started tidying and reorganizing the playroom and left Kathy to meet and greet mothers and babies at the front gate.

Another afternoon while the children were napping, I saw one of them leap up, scurry a few feet, then vanish right through a wall. Totally astonished, I counted the sleeping children and found none to be missing. I counted again just to make sure, but they were all there.

Just before lunch time one other day, all the children were outside having a short play and were beginning to line up to wash their hands in preparation to eat their lunch. I stepped through the glass doors leading inside and instantly heard giggling coming from the playroom. I thought it odd as I knew that all the kids were outside as I’d just been out there, and if a child had come in they would have had to walk right passed me ... and that certainly hadn’t happened.

I heard the giggling again only this time louder and more obvious. I reluctantly made my way to the playroom ... and found it to be empty and silent – just as I thought I would.

Three or four coloured crayons lay strewn on one of the small tables, and a piece of paper lay nearby with a stick figure drawing of what looked to be a family - two adults, one taller than the other, and two smaller figures resembling children. I felt a little stricken realizing that the crayons and drawings had not been there earlier when we’d gone outside for play time.

Harry the Mouse’s cage door was ajar and he sniffed at his open doorway. I knew that it had been closed and locked prior to us going outside earlier as well. I closed Harry’s door and turned to greet the children filtering inside ready for their lunch.

All the while I had the creepy feeling that I was being watched intently and intensely by something or someone in the room. Maybe more than just one.

After two years of working at the childcare centre, I left for a promotion in a nearby suburb - and I was very pleased and relieved that I did because I was being driven insane with the endless antics of the unseen ghost children.
