TRUE GHOST STORIES - The House Guests That Never Left

Updated on June 3, 2011

Ghosts and Spirits as uninvited house guests ...

As told by Melinda

When I was 14 my older cousin Cassandra (18 at the time) came to live with my family. My younger sister Cherie and I didn’t get along with Cassandra though, and we avoided her as much as we could, although she was often left in charge to baby-sit us every second Friday night when my parents played card games with friends at a club.

Soon after Cassandra moved in I began hearing footsteps in the hallway and lounge-room at night after everyone had gone off to sleep. I would often see a soft glow under my bedroom door, but whenever I would gather up the courage and go and out to check the lounge-room it would be empty and there would be no lights on anywhere.

It made me really scared and I began to lock my bedroom door at night.

Things began disappearing too. I’d put a book down on a table only to turn around and find it gone. Sometimes my lost items would reappear in the strangest of places days later ... places I knew I hadn’t left them. My hairbrush would go missing for days and my pocket-money would disappear just when I needed it. A new skirt of mine disappeared and I plucked up the courage to ask Cassandra if she’d seen it. “It wouldn’t fit me” she snarled at me. “Anyway” she continued, “my new shirt went missing last week, did you take it?” she asked accusingly.

My shoes went missing, my mother’s gold earrings were lost, and Cherie’s skateboard was never to be seen again. It was eerie, scary and frightening and I never ever felt comfortable in the house and refused to stay home alone. Cherie felt the same way, and although my mum and dad tried to find logical explanations in an attempt to appease us, it was obvious that they too had no idea what was going on, or why.

One night my bedroom suddenly grew icy cold and I sensed a presence approaching my bed. I couldn’t see anything or anyone, but it was as though an energy field or force was moving around the room. I tried to get up and run, but I couldn’t move a muscle. All I could do was lie there wide-eyed and seemingly paralysed. I wanted to scream, but no sound would come out of my mouth. I felt hopeless, helpless and frightened out of my wits.

I eventually felt the presence move towards my door and finally leave. I was no longer paralysed, but lay wide awake, unmoving, until dawn.

When I was 17 my parents decided to sell up and move closer to my grandmother in a smallish country town, so the house went on the market for sale. I felt relieved at the thought of leaving that spooky house.

Cassandra got a job in the city so moved out not long before we actually sold the house, and once she was gone the spooky happenings seemed to abate; but they never fully stopped. There was always something odd going on in that house.

A couple of years later at a family function, I mentioned the spooky happenings to a cousin, and she looked at me in surprise. “Didn’t you know that when your parents were out, Cassandra used to hold séances with her friends in your lounge-room?” she asked.

Suddenly it all made perfect sense. Cassandra had opened our home up to ghosts and spirits and had failed to send them away, allowing them to hang around our house, terrorizing us.

Many years have passed since, and I've often wondered if the house still has the same uninvited house guests hanging around making things disappear ...
