TRUE GHOST STORIES - The Noisy Ghost

Updated on May 31, 2011

Our home was haunted ...

My partner Jeff and I moved into an old weatherboard home in a small town far away from our hometown, due to Jeff’s new job. I knew I’d be spending most nights alone as Jeff worked late as a security guard. It turned out that I was never alone in that old house as we had a very noisy ghost who wouldn’t leave.

One night I woke to the sound of footsteps walking up to my bedroom door, then towards my bed. But the door hadn’t opened, so whoever it was seemed to walk right through it. I was petrified and lay there telling myself that I’d just imagined it. When I took a peek over my blankets there was no one and nothing there, so I convinced myself that I’d mis-heard the noise and went back to sleep.

Another night I was woken by the sound of smashing plates and banging pots and pans, and cupboard doors and draws slamming shut. I assumed that Jeff had come home from work early and was hungry, so I made my way to the kitchen to greet him. But when I got there the noise instantly stopped and no one was there. The kitchen was totally empty. Pots and pans sat on the bench and 3 draws were hanging open. There was a broken plate in the sink and two cupboards sat ajar. I just stood there rooted to the spot in terror. I didn’t know what to think or do. I wanted to run but my feet wouldn’t move. I kept staring at the debris of whatever ‘thing’ had made this mess and couldn’t even begin to think of a logical explanation other than that we must have a very noisy ghost in residence.

Finally I made my way back to my bedroom, but I didn’t sleep for the rest of the night, and when Jeff finally came home at dawn, I showed him the kitchen and told him about the mysterious footsteps from a couple of nights prior – and I told him that we needed to leave here – today.

Jeff looked around the kitchen with his mouth agape. “Who did this?” he asked me. “I don’t know, this is the thing that bothers me most. I thought it was you, but when I came in, no one was here, just this mess.” Jeff just shook his head.

We tidied the kitchen and discussed our options. We’d just moved in a little over a week ago, and didn’t have the financials to be able to afford another move and all the costs that go with it, but neither of us wanted to stay and live in the house any longer.

Jeff went off to work that evening and I dreaded the time alone. We hadn’t been here long enough for me to have made any friends, and my family was far away back home, so there was no one who could come over and keep me company and no one for me to visit for the night. I kept the TV on, but couldn’t relax and kept looking over my shoulder and feeling creeped-out that someone or something was looking at me all night.

By 11pm I decided to go to bed and hoped that our noisy ghost would take the night off and let me sleep in peace ... but not long after making that wish and getting settled in bed, I heard the sound of someone tapping on my bedroom wall. I knew that I was alone in the house, so knew straight away that weird stuff was happening again.

The tapping grew faster and louder as I lay there petrified. Finally I could stand it no longer so I yelled out “STOP IT!” and the tapping stopped immediately. This freaked me out even more and I didn’t know whether to lay there in bed or run off somewhere, but Jeff had taken our only car to work and I had nowhere to go and no way to get there. So I just lay there stiff as a board, hoping the noisy ghost would not be back.

In time I drifted off to sleep, only to be woken to the tapping noise on the wall again. This time it got faster and harder to the point of banging and again I yelled out for it to stop. Again the banging stopped instantly. I was even more frightened now as it was obvious that this something or someone was actually responding to me.

I grabbed a blanket and crept to the lounge room and turned on the TV, figuring that I wouldn’t be getting much sleep that night anyway so may as well distract myself with some late night viewing. I must have drifted off at some point, only to be woken when Jeff came home from work. I heard his key in the front door and sprang up to tell him about the latest antics of our noisy ghost. Jeff listened to my story with a sceptical look on his face, not really wanting to doubt me, but also finding my story hard to believe. I found it hard to believe as well, but I was there and it happened to me, so I knew what I knew.

I took the car into town while Jeff slept, and visited the real estate agents to see what rental properties were available as I really didn’t want to spend another night in that old house. But there was nothing available on such short notice, so a quick move was out of the question. I did a drive-by of the three motels in town and considered them to be an option – although an expensive one.

Pulling up in the driveway of the old weatherboard house I saw Jeff huddled on the porch with a blanket draped around him. I hurried out of the car and over to him and asked what on earth he was doing. Jeff said that he didn’t ever want to go back in the house and went on to tell me that he’d woken up from a deep sleep to go to the bathroom, and when he walked down the hallway he saw the top half of a male torso standing by the kitchen door. He’d turned on the spot and ran towards the front door, grabbing the blanket off the couch on his way out.

As totally freaked out and frightened as we were, we knew we’d need to get our essentials out of the house at the very least, so egging each other on, Jeff and I crept back into the house to retrieve some fresh clothes and toiletries, my handbag, papers and personal items, then drove off to the last of the motels I’d driven by not an hour earlier. We were both relieved to be getting away.

We stayed in the motel for three days until luckily one of the real estate agents rang to say that he had a house ready for us if we wanted it. We jumped on it and opted to sign the papers right then and there and move in as soon as possible. No matter what the house was like it had to be better than the old weatherboard, so we didn’t bother to inspect it - we just wanted out of our old place and anywhere would do. Jeff’s workplace was sympathetic to his plight (although they didn’t know the full story ...) and had given him an advance in his pay-packet so we could just afford the move. I organized the removalists and opted to have them pack our belongings for us so that Jeff and I didn’t have to spend any more time in the house than necessary. It was scary enough having to go back in at all.

The following day we turned up at the old weatherboard house just before the removalists were due, both of us hesitant to unlock the front door. We had no choice though as soon enough the removalists arrived and were ready to start packing and stacking. Once through the door Jeff and I went straight to our bedroom and packed our personal stuff while the movers packed the furniture and took it out to the waiting truck. I went to the kitchen to retrieve my crystals from the window sill above the sink, but stopped dead in my tracks when I saw all the drawers lying skewed across the kitchen floor with their contents scattered all around. Plates, cups and bowls spilled out from the open cupboard doors and pots and pans lay amongst knives and forks on the floor.

I spun on my heels to get the hell out of there and slammed straight into one of the removalists who I hadn’t heard come up behind me. I just about bowled him over in my haste to get away and he staggered backwards and hung onto my arm to steady himself.

He looked at me, then into the kitchen, then back at me. “This happened last time too,” he said. “When the last people moved out their stuff was all over the kitchen floor as well. We moved them out too, and the lady said that a ghost or some spirit had made the mess, and that’s why they were moving.” I just stood there aghast. Part of me felt all the more frightened, and another part of me felt relieved to know that Jeff and I weren’t the only ones to have encountered this noisy spirit or ghost and that we weren’t insane.

We were in our new home by the end of that day and never went anywhere near that old weatherboard haunted house and it’s noisy ghost ever again ... but I’ll never forget it.
