TRUE GHOST STORIES - The Travelling Ghost
Travelling spirit ...
My grandad Charlie lived three states away so we didn’t get to see much of him when I was growing up. When he died suddenly of a heart attack we hadn’t had the chance to say goodbye. We made it to the funeral though, and I remember my mother weeping the whole way home on the long, long drive. She sometimes spoke of times with her Dad and reminisced. Sometimes she’d chuckle to herself remembering good times.
After a short food stop, we hopped back in the car for the next leg of the trip, and mum turned the radio on and looked for a local station with decent reception. An old song came on and mum paused briefly. She switched the station, but that was playing the same song; and the next, and the next. Four stations playing the same song - too weird. Mum snapped off the radio.
Three hours later we stopped for another break. The same thing happened. It was creepy. I started to feel that there was three of is the car, not just me and mum, but I couldn’t see anyone, just kind of felt it, some sort of thick air or invisible something, hard to describe and explain. I was pretty sure for some reason that it was my grandad Charlie. I had a feeling mum thought the same thing, but we didn’t say anything about it out loud. We just gave each other sideways glances now and then.
We talked for the next hour or so, almost forgetting about the strange radio incident and our invisible traveller. Mum started telling me about her childhood and mentioned the special ski trip she’d gone on with her family and 3 of her best friends on her 16th birthday, and the radio suddenly came on, blaring the same song as before. I felt a chill run right through me from head to toe and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. It was totally freaky!
Mum pulled the car over opposite a park and stumbled out of the car as quickly as she could. I was out in a flash too. We stood huddled together on the grass about 20 metres away from the car, and just stared at it, then back at each other.
Mum said she didn’t want to get back in and drive the car again and I agreed with her, but we had to get home that night, and we only had an hour or so left to go.
I told mum about the weird feelings I’d had earlier and that I thought that we had a travelling ghost with us. I said I thought that it was her dad Charlie. Mum nodded and teared up again, then took a few deep breaths and said that if it was her dad then there was no reason for us to be afraid. But what was with the song and the radio??
We talked each other into getting back in the car and made our way back. We drove off quickly, wanting to get home as soon as we could.
10 minutes from home the radio, and the song, came blaring to life again. I just about jumped out of my skin and screamed spontaneously.
Mum had jumped and squealed too and had had to steady the steering wheel quickly.
I leaned forward to snap the radio off, but mum stopped me and said to let the song play.
We listened to the words as the song played, and mum turned and smiled at me, a tear running down her check. “I didn’t realize it before, but this was the song my dad played at my party ... the ski trip party for my 16th.” she said. I just sat quietly, letting the song play and mum reminisce.
Once the song ended Mum said ‘thanks Dad ... I love you ... bye’ under her breath.
Pulling up in the driveway, finally home, I gave mum a hug and felt happy and light somehow. Mum said she felt the same - everything was going to be ok.
It was as though grandad had travelled along with us on our long trip home from his funeral - and although it was freaky at the time, looking back on it, it was comforting in a strange way, and it was certainly proof to me that once someone dies, their spirit or soul lives on.
